Sher-e-Bangla
Agricultural University (SAU) is located in the heart of the capital city,
Dhaka with excellent public transportation facilities to reach the university.
The SAU campus stands on 86.92 acres (35.19 ha) of picturesque land covered by
green plantations.
The "Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001" was passed in the national Parliament on 09 July 2001. The foundation stone of the University was laid by the then Honorable Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina on 15 July 2001 and inaugurated the university activities through the appointment of the first Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Shadat Ulla. The Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University had started its formal functions on 11 September 2001 following the issuance of a notification by the Government as per requirement of the "Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001".
The
Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI) was established on December 11, 1938 by
Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq, the then Chief Minister of undivided Bengal. At
that time the name of this institution was "The Bengal Agricultural
Institute" was renamed "East Pakistan Agricultural Institute" in
1947. After the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country in 1971, the
name of the institute was spontaneously changed to Bangladesh Agricultural
Institute (BAI). Since its inception in 1938, the BAI had been functioning as a
"Faculty of Agriculture" under Dhaka University. Meanwhile with the
establishment of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) at Mymensingh in 1961
its academic function was transferred to BAU in 1964 till it’s up gradation to
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in 2001.
Over
nearly a hundred years, SAU has grown into a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive
university with agriculture and Agribusiness in the center point. Since
inception, the institution has made outstanding contributions to our nation, especially
to agricultural production and food security. From 1938 hitherto, our
university has a total number of more than 7000 graduates, more than 1000
Master’s degree. Graduates can be found everywhere in the country and abroad
and contributing tremendously to feed the universe. It is now adopting Animal
& veterinary science and Fisheries faculties with distinctive features

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University was established for the expansion of
higher agricultural education and committed to promote research in various
fields of agricultural sciences and to offer extension services. A number of
research projects have been undertaken by the different departments of the
University.
It
has made a significant progress towards commencing collaborative research
programmes with some foreign universities.
At
SAU, undergraduate and graduate programs are developing concurrently, with
teaching and research as the two central tasks. There are 2 Bachelor’s programs
provided for undergraduate. Besides, the university offers Master’s programs
and Doctoral programs. At present there are more than 390 faculty and staff at
SAU, including 30 full professors and 34 associate professors. The campus
houses modern teaching spaces, excellent library and other campus facilities
including accommodation for approximately 2000 undergraduate and more than 500
graduate students.
Benefited
from geological location, SAU has been actively building national academic
exchanges and co-operations with other academic and research organizations in
the country and abroad. It has established inter-institutional ties with
leading research organizations of the country. Every year numbers of foreign
scholars come here to make academic exchanges and to give lectures. In
addition, our university has been sending teachers and researchers to other
countries for short-term training, education and cooperative research

Admission
a
Admission to
the undergraduate program will be carried out as per the Ordinance of
students' admission in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. The Registrar's
office will deal with registration as well.
Cancellation of
Admission
If a student fails to maintain on
an average 70% of the class attendance of the courses before filling up of
the form of the semester final examination of Level-1, Semester-I, his/her
admission shall automatically stand cancelled.
Admission to
Masters and Ph. D Course
A separate brochure is available
at the office of the Dean (post Graduate Studies) and Deputy Registrar
(Academic). The students interested to get admission into M.S or Ph. D course
may obtain the same on payment of necessary charges.
Admission of
Foreign Students
Foreign students interested for
admission in any course of this University must apply well in advance through
their respective mission in Bangladesh to the Ministry of Education,
Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Secretariat,
Dhaka-1000 enclosing evidence of examinations passed and transcripts of
academic accomplishments. After submission of application within the
stipulated date, the admission committee of the university will review the
candidate's eligibility for admission.

Each of the degree is a four-year

As a part of the ‘academic
curriculum students at levels 3 & 4 are required to perform study tour
for enriching their practical knowledge. In addition students have to perform
Farm & Home Visit, Agricultural Survey, Visit to Research Organizations,
Extension Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and a
weeklong Extension Field Trip at Upazilla level as the practical assignments
of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System.

Type of Courses
The courses included in the
undergraduate curricula are divided into the following groups.
a) Core/Compulsory Courses: In
each semester specific number of courses will be offered as core courses
which are considered as compulsory courses.
b) Elective Courses: There
will be a number of courses which will be offered as elective courses.
Students have to complete four elective courses out of a number of elective
courses according to their choice. The chosen elective courses will be
treated as compulsory courses.
Academic credit
When a student enrolls at
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, shall earn academic credits. In case
of theoretical courses, one lecture per week per semester (16 weeks) will be
equivalent to one credit i.e., for a 3-credit course; there will be three
lectures per week per semester. In case of practical, one practical class of
three hours per week per semester will be equivalent to two credits.

SAU Research
System (SAURES)
|
SAU Research System (SAURES) is
headed by a Director. He is assisted by a Senior Scintific Officer and two
Scientific Officers. It accounts for advanced studies and research, evaluate
and approve and monitor research proposals. The SAU Research System also
coordinates the over all research activities of the university. The System
arranges seminars and workshops involving teachers and eminent scientists.
SAU Research System is going to publish Abstracts of the approved thesis of M.S
Students of SAU. SAURES publishes a scientific Journal named “Journal of
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System”.
